If you can give your child a thirst for reading, the total globe opens to him. We saw it with Joy, who at 6 was reading at a level twice her age. But for Joy, a visual learner, the process had been an easy, almost effortless method. When we experimented with to use the exact same methods with Hope, we discovered two things: Hope is not a visual learner and we actually had no method to teach reading! So with Hope we had to start from scratch. We found ourselves bouncing from one approach to an additional, scatterbrained, but as well poor to place out the megabucks required for any of the flashier applications. And as you might count on, we didn't make a good deal of progress. Then we stumbled across this guide! What a require it met.

Phonics-based mostly, easy to follow, economical, nonconsumable, and self-contained, it was all that we have been looking for. There are no workbooks, no flashcards, practically nothing fancy—just you, one-on-one with your child for twenty minutes a day.

Based on the nationally successful DISTAR system, this program has been adapted for mother or father and child use, and looks custom-made for the home school setting. Yes, this method does use visual clues in the first 80 lessons, but then they drop the clues and your child will take off working. We had been doubtful at first, but soon after going via it with four youngsters and hearing hundreds of “success” stories, we're believers! After 100 lessons your child will be reading at a solid 2nd grade level.

My only complaint includes the stories. There is a new story each and every lesson, beginning at lesson 13, and they are also silly for my tastes. But they had been the highlights for all our youngsters, so I won't complain too loudly! Hope, right after 50 lessons, was reading smoothly, writing brief “stories,” and on her very own picked up and read other "easy" books. She finished the book before her 5th birthday and effortlessly moved into a 3rd grade reading text. Grace also finished the program although even now 4, though there have been days that we more than exceeded the twenty minutes prescribed.
