Geschlecht mit Perspektiven

For the ears of all the Princes of Germany and Beyond -

In the year 1131, I, Mael de Memmingen, Viscount of Memmingen, removed myself from the Duchy of Swabia and the feudal vassalage of the Swabian Family. While my father and grandfather worked hard to solidify ties with the Swabian House, I have found myself distasteful of the relationship between our two houses and distrusting of Swabia's ability to lead. Discussion among the Swabian Princes about the future of Germany was frequently quashed by the Duke and his family- I myself witnessed him chastise another Prince for seeking information. Any attempts on my behalf to understand Swabia's perspective on these matters were met with gibberish- my last inquiry was responded to with nonsense verse along the lines of "black is cat and bat is bat." As such, I determined the Swabian family Head to be utterly mad and, therefore, unable to fulfill his Feudal Obligations.

Fortuitously, I was approached by both Austria and Saxony for my vassalage at that time. While I wholeheartedly hope to see a united Germany in the future, hopefully with some measure of the Confederation proposed by my father, I decided that it would be best for the safety of my people to pledge my lands to the state which bordered them, however my family may have felt about them during the Civil War which wreaked havoc those many years ago. As such, while I willingly pledge my loyalty and efforts to the Austrian Throne, I hope to remain on good terms, as much as I can, with my former allies in Saxony. It was not my intent nor my wish to see harm done to their efforts - only to seek out a feudal lord which would be more respectful as well as able to handle the demands of their obligations.

On a final note - the House of Biberach has chosen to abandon their own vassalage of me. This is, of course, their own prerogative, and it is my hope that they will pledge under a House which will respect them and look after them as much as I have attempted to do so. As such, I wish to publicly state that I plan no retaliation against them for their decision.

- Mael de Memmingen

Viscount of Memmingen

Highly esteemed Lords of Germania,

I truly regret that I have just now discovered the forum and this topic in particular; kudos to flavius, my good friend and ally, the Count of Holland, for beginning this discussion!  It is all too clear, however, that the question which this post was meant to address remains unresolved.  Indeed, many years have slipped away, but the question remains: Now what?!  Now what for Germany?

As many of you may know, I, being unaware that the forum and this topic existed, have been in the process of contacting the princes of Germany individually in the hopes of creating an alliance nearly identical to the one laid out by the House of Memmingen in his post from June 29th.  This alliance, which I’ve fancied to call ‘the United Independent States of Germany’ (though call it what you like!) rests on the very same principles of sovereignty, unity, and security that Memmingen proposes, including the merely regulatory role of government and the right to vote on issues of national concern.

Many of you have already shown your support for this endeavor -I sincerely thank you for that!- and I am very happy to say that I am nearly able to proclaim the Kingdom and thereby ensure that Germany is finally safe from any foreign threat.  Long before the war, I was a supporter of the Kingdom, and though I still harbor no great desire to hold the position of king, I see NO ONE else willing or able to unite us into a secure nation.  Indeed, it seems that certain German lords, formerly active, are no longer so.  It is, therefore, not out of personal ambition but rather pure, mutual necessity that I call on you to support the creation of this national alliance which I am trying to forge.

Though I am by no means an expert at the game, I’ve been learning quickly, I work hard and have a virtually unlimited availability (I can be online 12+ hours/day normally).  Furthermore, I am a duke twice over (Duke of Saxon and Duke of Dutch, plus several other, lesser titles which means that my level of prestige is, at least, decent), and my house is already allied by marriage to several of the royal houses of Europe (we are on very good terms).  But don’t take my word for it!  Look for yourself!  :)

In the end, I believe we all have a choice: unite together as a nation, or face eventual, foreign invasion-aggression.  If we do nothing, that WILL happen, sooner or later, more likely than not.  I am sure that nobody among us wants war; nobody among you wants to see your troops attacked and your lands taken.  I certainly do not!!!  The only way we can prevent that is to unify as a nation.  So, then, will YOU help us to protect Germany?!  Will you help us, we who have already united to build a secure and prosperous country for all of us?  If so, please let me know, here or by private message.  We need your support.  All input is welcomed and encouraged!  Thank you!

Sincerely,

Duke of Saxon, etc.

PS. If someone else among us truly wishes and is able to be king, please come forth and present yourself!  If you are sincere & dedicated, I will surely support you and recommend that others do too!  But please be quick!  This simply cannot wait any longer…

Greetings Fellow Princes of Germany,

Though I doubt that any feel I have fallen under sway of Witchcraft -many fellow Princes seem to have followed suit, and few have gone out of their way to dispute my accusations against the House of Swabia- I nonetheless wish to share this exchange with you all for the purposes of clarifying beyond any doubt my decision to leave Swabia behind.

Many would have seen that my soldiers have besieged Elzach. The following letter preceded this siege by several months, with the responses only reaching me mere days prior to my starting the siege.

Encased in the letter are two other letters, each marked with a specific date denoting when they were sent. If inspected, one might note that each is clearly marked as an authorized facsimile with the stamp of the Memmingen Abbey beside the mark.

Addressee: Emil111
Subject:Terms of Surrender
Date:2015-07-19 00:46:25

Greetings House of Swabia,

My armies have been encamped upon Elzach for some time now, and I wish to let you know, as a gesture of good will and acknowledgement of the history between our two houses, that it is only a short matter of time before we besiege the city.

You declared this war, not I. As such, it is up to you to end it. I urge you to accept the peace terms I have demanded, which include (at present) an 8000 gold donation, swearing fealty as Lord of Elzach to me, and peace between our people. Doing so saves your people from the devastation that can be wrought by a siege, and saves you the matter of rebuilding your economy.

Should you accept those terms, I swear to return half (4000) of the gold paid in return for saving me the time and effort of awaiting Elzach's starvation. Should you wait until I am already besieging the city (which should happen within the year) before accepting those terms, I will return only a quarter (2000) of the gold paid.

Let us be friends again, Swabia. Don't make me besiege your cities and force an end to this war that only hurts both of us.

Sincerely,
-Mael de Memmingen

Do with this exchange what you will. I've no interest in letting the good name of the German nobility be tarnished by allowing such madness to remain hidden away in the shadows.

// non rp - this post is meant to be here for following generations of players who realize there is stuff happening in the game and there is a Forum to search for knowledge of the past //

Due to the recent downtime of the server I have time to close this Thread more or less and give a short summary of the recent happenings in Germany and its surroundings. I will not go closely into the Irish-Denmark Incident  nor into the Fulda Incident, as for these are topic of another history lessons.

To the beginning of this Thread we felt the aftermath of the Fulda Incident, Northern Germany was mostly split up, Fuldas direct and most trusted vassals left the

game as did others. The player eto, owning huge lands in the north-east and Austrias and Portugals most favourite contender to the german throne, left the game

aswell, leaving a huge gap in germany. As for Austrias plans of originally founding his own "Kingdom of Austria" he had to subside these after realizing that

there was no suitable contender for the throne but himself. I do not want to denounce Saxon at this point, but Austrias capability outstands his.

In the following years lands north of Austria were besieged and conquered, inactive players. Others were asked to join Austria to found the Kingdom of Germany and giving the land finally a protective structure which, as the near future showed, was necessary (Ireland / Denmark Incident). Most land could be vassaled to Austria without conquering or threatening them. The Duke of Swabia (Emil111) refused to do so and in the following war it became obvious he had lacking knowledge of the game, making the war short.

I may admit that the Duke was still biased towards Austria because of the preceding Fulda Incident and thus the diplomatic way was slightly hampered, more about his attitude can be found in streatim's previous posts, a former vassal of Swabia. However, the north of Germany did not see the war against Swabia lightly, as the only picture of Austria they got from his actions were those of a warmongerer. In the time after Swabia's forced vassalization Austria had long arguments with several people, one which he held most public was with Saxony. It took a long time but before any side gave completly up upon diplomacy (authors comment: conquering Saxony was no option for Austria, a unwilling vassal was a risk he didnt want to take) Saxony could be convinced that Austria is a reasonable leader.

Preventing the Creation of Germany was the Irish-Denmark Incident, after which the Creation of the Kingdom of Germania finally began under Austria as contender of the throne.

If there are any questions open over this rough summary of Germany's history I am willing to answer them too, just send me a message and I'll try to answer as soon as possible.
