To find a good restaurant, look at the customers who eat there. It's simple but if you see that there are only tourists in a restaurant, it's probably not a good sign. If you only see locals, it's a good sign . If people seem to know the place and be happy eating it is fine. Look also if the clientele is suitable. Example: an Asian restaurant must have a large number of Asian customers, whatever the country where you are.
To find a good restaurant, see if it is full or not!
Another tip is to  look at whether it is full or not , especially at peak times. The ideal being the restaurants where there is a queue. Keep in mind this place and  come back another time when there will be a little less people . This advice applies if the people there are locals and not groups of tourists who fill the restaurant.

A good restaurant often has recommendations at the entrance
If you see that the restaurant has many recommendations from several known guides , it's a good sign! Pay attention to dates, they must be recent . Some restaurants may have been recommended several years ago, but not today. The quality of a restaurant can go down, the owner can change ...
Look at the freshness of the products in the window
When you have products in the window at the entrance of restaurants, which happens quite often in southern countries, pay attention to the freshness of the products . Watch how fresh the fish look or not. FYI, a fresh fish is normally quite bright in the skin, and the eyes must be shiny too and not sag.
Pay attention to the appearance of the dishes
If you have the opportunity to see the dishes served , especially when there are terraces, look how good they look or not. The quantities served, the side dishes, whether the fries look homemade or not ...
With all these tips, you should normally avoid unpleasant surprises, anyway I hope! :)
